A RAINWORTH pensioner has had a lucky escape after her carbon monoxide alarm — which was fitted after a chance conversation with her hairdresser — detected the deadly gas at her Beverley Close home and saved her life.
Seventy-nine-year-old Jean Setchfield was having her hair styled at Marie Day's Chesterfield Road salon last year when the conversation turned to the deaths of two children who had died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Greece.

Marie's husband Daz suggested Jean should get an alarm and took her to buy one. After having the £25 device fitted, she thought no more about it until it went off.

"It was about 11 o'clock andI'd gone to bed when the alarm went off," she told Chad. "I thought it was the fire alarm and I was trying to prod it to stop it.

"It was very loud and it frightened me to death but I'm so thankful I got Gas alarm because it certainly saved my life."

The following day Jean discovered the carbon monoxide was being released from the electric fire in her living room and had the appliance cleaned to solve the problem.

Jean said the only reason she bought the alarm was because of the chance conversation with Marie and Daz and told Chad she believes every household should now invest in one.

"Marie has been my hairdresser for years and they have been friends of mine for a long time and it just happened that it came up in conversation," she said.

"It's strange to think that a little box has saved my life and I'd encourage other people to get one."
