A Hollywood family credited their smoke detector for waking them up during a fire Wednesday morning.
A fire broke out at Chip Singer's home on 72nd Avenue near Sheridan Street at about 4:30 a.m.
Singer said the combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector woke him up. He told his wife and two kids, and they escaped.
No one was injured in the fire. The damage to the house was minor.
Singer said he believes the hot water heater malfunctioned and started the small blaze.
The family will stay with friends or family while repairs are made.
