A disposable breathalyser kit is being heralded as a new weapon in the bid to curb WA’s high road toll.

Crime Stoppers and Redline have launched a new self test kit that tells motorists if they are safe to drive after consuming alcohol.

The compact breathalysers, which contain two tester tubes and a reusable bag, fit into a wallet or glove box and cost $8.99.

The Alcohol Tester show if a driver is below the 0.05 per cent blood alcohol limit with the results able to be read within two minutes.

Crime Stoppers WA chief executive officer Tony Carter said they had watched for too long the severe consequences of drink driving, with fatal crashes costing the WA community more than $75 million annually.

“It is unfair to cause that kind of devastating impact on another person’s family because of irresponsible behaviour,” Mr Carter said.

Redline general manager Nick Clews said that everyone’s metabolism was different and factors such as age, weight, gender and serving sizes of drinks also came into play in relation to a person’s capability to drive.

A recent report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau revealed a decrease in knowledge among males and females about what was a safe level to drink when driving.

The kits will be sold at Woolworths and Big W and will soon be available at liquor stores, service stations, pharmacies and convenience stores. Single unit packs will be sold in pubs, clubs, restaurants and other entertainment venues.
